Itanagar, March 6, 2025 – Prominent activist Sol Dodum has joined thousands of Christian protesters in Arunachal Pradesh in a massive demonstration against the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (APRFA) 1978. The protests, which erupted across the state, are demanding the repeal of the decades-old law, which critics argue is being used to suppress religious freedom.
The demonstrations, organized by various Christian organizations and civil rights groups, have drawn large crowds in Itanagar, Pasighat, and other major towns. Protesters allege that APRFA 1978, originally intended to prevent forced religious conversions, has been misused to target minority religious groups, particularly Christians.
Speaking at the protest in Itanagar, Sol Dodum, a well-known activist who previously fought against corruption and water crises in Arunachal Pradesh, called the law “a tool of oppression” and urged the state government to repeal it.
"The Constitution guarantees us the right to practice and propagate our faith. This outdated law is being weaponized to harass and intimidate religious minorities. It’s time for Arunachal Pradesh to move forward and embrace true religious freedom," Dodum said, addressing a crowd of thousands.
The protests have gained significant traction in recent weeks, with church leaders, student unions, and human rights organizations joining the movement. Protesters carried banners with slogans such as "Repeal APRFA 1978!" and "Stop Religious Persecution in Arunachal!" while chanting in support of equal rights.
State authorities have responded by increasing security across protest sites to prevent any escalation. While the demonstrations have remained largely peaceful, there are concerns that tensions could rise if the government does not engage in dialogue with the protesters.
The Arunachal Pradesh government has yet to issue an official response to the growing unrest. However, sources indicate that discussions are underway regarding possible amendments to the controversial law.
The ongoing protests mark a significant moment in Arunachal Pradesh’s religious and political landscape, with activists like Sol Dodum amplifying calls for justice and equal treatment for all religious communities. As demonstrations continue, all eyes remain on the state government’s next move.
